For the past 5 years, I’ve allowed myself to go on 1 trip a year. It’s sort of like my gift for adulting hard all year. Well, that’s what I tell myself but I think I’m just so used to being transient that I need to go away for at least 2 weeks or I will lose my shit. I have a day job in digital advertising that takes up most of my time and headspace, I barely even get to update my website so you can only imagine that vacations are very scarce.
2017 was the only year I didn’t go anywhere outside of the West Coast. Instead, I took a lot of mini trips both personal and for work. 2017 was the year that broke me, and in a way fixed me. I moved to a new place, went on a lot of adventures, worked harder on my career and taught myself a bunch of new skills. It’s nice to take time to find your bearings again.
My recent favorite getaway was Vegas for the holidays where Vanessa and I snuck out from the group to check out Amorgosa Valley. We’ve been talking about going to the dunes in Nevada for so long now so when we were 10 minutes away with nothing left in my tank and 13 minutes of sunlight left, we still tried to push it to see how far my car would go before hitting zero. Right when we can finally see the sandy hills in the horizon, we eventually stopped the car and googled the closest gas station and decided (it was a long the deliberation) to finally turn around before we get stuck.
We tried again the next morning, this time able to reach our destination and it was as beautiful as we had imagined it to be. That’s when I realized I don’t have to run away far to escape, road trips around the neighboring countys and states are full of amazing surprises.
