Chance The Rapper – Acid Rap
I was introduced to Chance The Rapper through his second mixtape, Acid Rap. Til this day, this is still my favorite album from him. It has elements of classic soul, juke, gospel, blues-rock, acid jazz, house, ragtime scat, all that you expect from a Chance record but over stories by a young Chancellor Bennett freshly out of his teens.
Favorite Tracks: GoCocoa Butter Kisses, Juice, Everybody’s Something, Favorite Song
Anderson Paak – Cover Art
After dropping “Breezy Lovejoy”, Anderson Paak dropped Cover Art. It’s very very rare to stumble upon cover artists who do the original songs justice, but .Paak captures the heart of each song while adding a fresh take with urban contemporary vibes. You can find some of the most impressive and original covers of popular rock, folk, and alternative bands like The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Beatles, and The White Stripes in this 6 track album.
Favorite Tracks: MAPS, Such Great Heights, Blackbird, Hold The Line
Childish Gambino – STN MTN/Kauai
STN MTN seems to be a slice of Donald Glover’s version of Atalanta, while Kauai represents his present. This conceptual project presents a juxtaposition of personal inspiration and life experience, both sides morph to become Childish Gambino. STN MTN offer a more personal reflection of Glover’s hometown featuring artists from Georgia like Future, Maceo and Kari Faux and samples even more, closing with “GO DJ” thanking DJ Drama and his supporters. Gambino wakes up in an island in Kauai, a verbalized beach session filled with chilled out hip-hop tunes, more soft and dream like talking about his experiences about love and peace.
